Carlo, a surgeon highly regarded among his colleagues, lost his wife, Adele, due to complications arising from an illness. Tormented for not having been able to save her, thanks to Margherita – his colleague at the hospital and Adele’s best friend – Carlo has managed to overcome and build a new life project.

However, Carlo’s certainties come crashing down when Nina – a charming con artist with a talent for imitating anyone’s voice – suffers a crisis during a séance organized to get her hands on the money of the rich Ortensia, Margherita’s grandmother.

Nina, in an apparent trance-like state, utters a phrase that only Adele could have said to her. When the doctor seeks her out again to understand how she could have knowledge of this secret code between lovers, in a new outburst, Nina hints at the possibility that Adele did not die of her illness, but was murdered.
