All international series participating in the official Fiction and Non-Fiction sections will have their Spanish premiere at the South International Series Festival.

The Cadiz Festival will bring together 50 screenings of platforms from Spain, UK, Portugal, Germany, France, Colombia, USA, Mexico, Uruguay and Brazil.

Monday, September 23, 2024.- South International Series Festival will showcase its most international edition with screenings from a dozen countries.
The Spanish premiere of “Leonardo Da Vinci”, a documentary series produced by Florentine Films and WETA Washington D.C., which joins the Official Non-Fiction Section, and “Joan“, directed by Richard Laxton and starring Sophie Turner, which joins the Official Fiction Section, join the nearly 50 series that were presented last Wednesday at the press conference held in Madrid, and that will be screened from October 25 to 31 in the capital of Cádiz.

Directed by Ken Burns, Sarah Burns and David McMahon and written by David McMahon and Sarah Burns, “Leonardo Da Vinci” is a two-part, four-hour documentary that explores the life and work of the 15th century polymath. Set against the backdrop of Renaissance Italy, the film brings to life the artist’s enormous accomplishments through his prolific personal notebooks, primary and secondary accounts of his life, and on-camera interviews with modern scholars, artists, engineers, inventors and admirers. This documentary to be screened in Cadiz on Tuesday, October 29th in an afternoon session explores one of the most curious and innovative minds of mankind.

Also today, South International Series Festival announced the addition to its lineup of “Joan” (UK), a drama directed by Richard Laxton and starring Sophie Turner, based on the true story of Joan Hannington, a jewel thief in 1980s Britain, who is torn between her prosperous and daring career in the world of crime and the struggle to recover her daughter from social services.

These two series join other international productions from Portugal, the United Kingdom, Germany, Colombia, Mexico, Italy, Brazil, Russia and France, which have already been confirmed:

  • XUXA: O DOCUMENTÁRIO ( Brazil).
    A five-episode documentary series on the life and career trajectory of the famous Brazilian TV presenter Xuxa.
    about to celebrate 60 years of life and more than 40 years of profession.
    Triumphs and disappointments, fights and loves recall his entire career in this production of Endemol Shine and Estúdios Globo
  • THIS TOWN (USA/UK).
    It is the story of a dysfunctional family that will have to overcome various obstacles to stay together.
    A production by Kudos (Banijay UK) and Nebulastar for BBC in co-production with Mercury Studios, with the collaboration of Kudos North, Stigma Films and Nick Angel, a series from Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.
  • NAUTILUS (United Kingdom, out of competition). Series written and produced by James Dormer with Michael Matthews as director, tells the origin story of Captain Nemo.
  • RIVAGES (SEA SHADOWS) (France).
    Fiction directed by David Hourrègue that narrates the story of
    Abigail, an oceanologist sent to Fécamp, her hometown, to analyze the reasons behind a mysterious shipwreck.
  • (IN)VISIBLE (Mexico) by Ecocinema and Acnur, narrates a journey through the lives of those who have been forced to leave their homes in search of a better future.
  • ODERBRUCH (Germany).
    An eight-part drama series with a supernatural touch, directed by Christian Alvart and Adolfo J. Kolmerer, which combines a dark criminal investigation with touches of the fantasy genre in an oppressive atmosphere.
  • MATILHA (Portugal) (7×45′).
    Starring Afonso Pimentel and Margarida Vila-Nova, this Portuguese series tells the story of a good-hearted Lisbon thug who tries to rebuild an honest life with his girlfriend Mafalda.
    But the world of crime will tempt him again and the way out will not be easy.
  • ALIVE ( UK).
    A series produced by ITN Productions, with French distribution giant Banijay, which tells, through the vivid and powerful testimony of survivors, the ultimate story of heroism in the “Miracle of the Andes”.
  • ON THIN ICE: PUTIN VS.
    GREENPEACE
    (Russia/UK).
    This co-production concerns a daring protest on a Russian oil rig that goes horribly wrong.
    As a result, the activists become unwitting pawns in Putin’s war against the West and at the center of a global crisis.
  • DEAD IN THE WATER (UK).
    A Raw production for Amazon Prime Video in association with All3Media International that recalls the time when a British couple was murdered during a trip through Central America in the 1970s.
    The case goes cold and 40 years later, their family investigates and discovers something surprising.
  • ESCUPIRÉ SOBRE SUS TUMBAS ( Colombia) ( Out of competition).
    A Caracol TV production with an international cast headed by Spanish actor Cristian Gamero and Puerto Rican Essined Aponte who give life to this story of love and revenge, set in the world of the Colombian Caribbean port elite.
