AN INITIATIVE OF
SOUTH SERIES INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL
MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, EUROPEAN UNION AND COOPERATION
Spanish in series/
Spanish series
The emergence of streaming as a universal distribution vehicle and the consolidation of platforms -many of them American-owned and operated- have brought about a profound transformation of the role played by languages in the international circulation of series.
The streaming phenomenon coincides with an unprecedented boom in the creation and production of Spanish-language series. An industry with highly dynamic production centers in Spain, Colombia, Mexico, Argentina and, to a lesser extent, Chile and Peru. And with a production that we can estimate between 120 and 150 Premium series with the intervention of the platforms and with a prominent role of the television channels.
The success of Spanish-language series such as La casa de papel, Élite and Pálpito has created a new situation that requires a more detailed knowledge and a better use of their international diffusion.
The phenomenon of the creation and production of premium series in Spanish is also gaining ground in the United States. 2022 was a landmark year with the creation of VIX, the first global platform for Spanish-language series with the alliance between Televisa (Mexico) and Univision (United States).
After two editions in seminar format, El español viaja en series takes a leap and becomes an International Meeting El español en las series/Las series en español is integrated into the program of the South Series International Festival and brings together experts, actors, writers, producers, distributors and public policy makers to address the issue from two points of view: the promotion of Spanish and the scope of audiovisual creation, production and distribution.
A joint initiative of the South Festival Internacional de Series and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and the European Union, El español en las series/Las series en español is offered as a tool to better understand the influence of series in the expansion of the Spanish language and to establish strategies to expand their markets.
To this end, El español en las series/Las series en español 2023 will bring together an outstanding cast of actors, writers, directors, producers, experts, analysts and politicians from Spain and the Americas.
